The Road
We live in a day and age today where you or your children can not only access a world of knowledge and information about any subject under the sun, but can unwittingly be pulled into the abyss of every dark and perverse thought and graphic that a sick mind who can make a web page can throw at you. Simple searches as many of you well know can bring you to places that you wish you never would have gone and show you images of things you wish you would never have seen.
This is not too different from centuries ago, but now it is done at the speed of a byte going through your internet connection. The Romans Empire built the roads. Great cobblestone highways, a vast spider of engineering that linked cities together. You must understand that those days were trecherous and men and caravans traveled heavily guarded lest they fall prey to bandits on those roads.
Yes, the Romans were responsible for a lot of the persecution of the church in those days. The brutality of the coloseums and vicious games they played. Much of this was done because of a missunderstanding of Christianity as well as political maneuvering where the Christians were blamed for everything from the great fire of Rome, to rebellion, and the turning of officials from emporer worship to becoming so called traitors by worshiping only one God.
Whatever you may think about the Romans, they were intuitive, resourceful, and they built the early roads where all may travel in relative safety from one city to another, from one destination to another. The good, the bad, and the ugly may travel these roads. The roads came just in time for the Christians to scatter across Europe and Asia to preach the gospel to all the parts of the known earth.
There are many similar milestones that I can't help but compare to the Roman Roads. The one obvious one is our beloved internet. Another is the Windows operating system, without which, computers would still be for geeks, by geeks, and the rest of the world has to be spoon fed by them the information they need or request.
Now I agree there is still a lot to be done, but a lot has already been done. When was the last time you even thought twice about sending an email message to your relative or friend across the globe. So whatever you may think about Microsoft or Bill Gates, they have created part of the road for the normal people to reach each other. This also just in time for the gospel to be sent to the rest of the earth.
Being a missionary on the net is nothing like preaching from a traditional stone church building. Things move at light speed, thing evolve and grow as technology changes. We move and grow and adapt with this.
